Top Energy Stocks To Invest In Right Now

By Rohit Gupta

First Solar (FSLR), America's leading provider of solar energy solutions, is known for its thin film solar modules, which use cadmium telluride, or CdTe, as a semiconductor substrate for generating electricity. Traditionally, CdTe panels are priced lower than commonly used polycrystalline silicon panels because of the difference in their raw material prices and manufacturing cost. One of the major disadvantages of this technology is that it is less efficient in conversion of electricity, which means that the higher the efficiency, the higher the production of electricity. Therefore, the company bet on a price differentiation strategy for promoting its panels.

Chinese manufacturers, which are gradually reducing the price gap in their polycrystalline silicon panels, will likely affect First Solar's strategy. The large presence of Chinese silicon panel manufacturers has resulted in oversupply in the market, which has brought down the prices of these panels. Therefore, it is important for First Solar, to manufacturer competitive products to remain in the market.

Emerald Oil (EOX) is a small (~$330mm) capitalization Bakken producer that I think has significant upside. It has fast growing production with sales tracking to better than a 70% gain this fiscal year and analysts' consensus for FY2014 have revenue more than doubling. A beneficial owner obviously finds the shares attractive as the entity took more than a $16mm stake in the firm in late May.

Small cap Triangle Petroleum Corporation (NYSEMKT: TPLM), just like its peers Emerald Oil Inc (NYSEMKT: EOX) and Kodiak Oil & Gas Corp (NYSE: KOG), is focused on the Williston Basin Bakken and Three Forks formations and the company is scheduled to release second quarter fiscal year 2014 financial results after the close of tradingnext Monday. And the last time earnings were reported, shares jumped around 10% plus management gave some rosy commentary for investors. With that in mind, should investors in Triangle Petroleum Corporation be ready for another earnings report that excites the bulls?

CVI is structured into two Managed Limited Partnerships (MLPs): CVR Refining (CVRR) and the nitrogen fertilizer unit CVR Partners (UAN). CVR Energy owns 71% of CVR Refining and 53% of CVR Partners. This is an interesting play in the energy sector, given UAN lower cost of ammonia and urea ammonium nitrate and CVRR edge as an MLP refiner.

    Denbury Resources (NYSE: DNR  )
Plano, Texas-based Denbury represents a truly unique way to play the strength in the U.S. oil and gas markets. The company utilizes a process called carbon dioxide enhanced oil recovery (CO2 EOR), or tertiary recovery, to produce oil from wells that otherwise might have seen their last days. Through the process, carbon dioxide is injected under high pressure into the otherwise spent wells, thereby facilitating production of large percentages of the remaining oil.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Vanina Egea]

Growing global economic recovery continues to place oil and gas explorers and explorers under pressure. Although recovery across the globe is unequal, energy demand rises steadily. While the most dramatic change in indicators has been recorder for North America, Europe struggles to find its north. Meanwhile, the Chinese economy returns to normal growth indicators. In addition to the pressure from developed economies over energy supplies, the Middle East and Africa fall prey to political uncertainty, scaring away foreign investors. The so called Arab Spring, and continued attacks to assets located in Africa, left many energy producing countries out of the business momentarily. Hence, others regions became more attractive as the proper equipment became available. For example, shale reserves in the US or Argentina. And, even the Chinese government took interest in the exploration of unconventional reserves. One company with important presence in North America is Cabot Oil and Gas (COG).

  • [By Arjun Sreekumar]

The company is also cozying up to the idea of using natural gas to fuel hydraulic fracking operations, an approach that exploration and production companies including Apache (NYSE: APA  ) and Cabot Oil & Gas (NYSE: COG  ) are already using.

  • [By Taylor Muckerman and Joel South]

Compare the paths they have charted to begin 2013 with peers that stuck to their guns, like Cabot Oil & Gas (NYSE: COG  ) and others mentioned in the video below, and it's clear to see that staying the course has paid off thus far. Cabot Oil & Gas will continue to target growth in the Marcellus Shale in 2013, and if the gas pricing trend continues it could be a very wise move.

Dan notes that by contrast, in today's market, most of the losing stocks are due to company- or industry-specific problems.
