Treasury Yields Aren’t Going Anywhere – Try Walmart, Target Stock Instead Disney Stock Is Vulnerable Despite EPS Beat View All Posts

Target (TGT) can't seem to do much right these days.

The Target CEO resigned in disgrace as the fallout from the credit card security breach last year continues to build. Sales are down at TGT, as customers have been timid about swiping their cards at Target, fearing their data could be compromised again. And Target's expansion into Canada 14 months ago has proven to be an unmitigated disaster f0r TGT stock, generating roughly a billion dollars in losses so far.

At a time when brick-and-mortar rival Walmart (WMT) is gaining ground on Amazon.com (AMZN) in online sales, Target's online presence hasn’t amounted to much. Up until as recently as 2011, Target depended on Amazon for site hosting and fulfillment.

Yet while Target has had its share of operational setbacks of late, Target stock has been the shining light of shareholder friendliness. Target has raised its dividend every year since 1967 — a run of 47 years and counting — and it has also been a serial share repurchaser. Since 2002, Target has reduced its shares outstanding from 1.3 billion to just 638 million as of its last reporting. That's a reduction of 44% in TGT stock.

Target Shares Outstanding Is Target Stock a Dividend Darling or Deadbeat?

Target stock dividend table Is Target Stock a Dividend Darling or Deadbeat?Let's return to Target's dividend growth. The TGT dividend has grown by 19% over the past year, which would be good news by itself. But what is truly impressive is the consistency. Target has grown its dividend by a compound annual rate of 20% for the past 10 years. And going back 20 years, it's a not-too-shabby 13%.

Think about the past 10-year period. It's been a never-ending string of crisis with one of the worst recessions in U.S. history in the middle. Yet Target stock still managed to raise its dividend at a 20% annual clip.

To put that in perspective, at a 20% growth rate, the dividend doubles every three-and-a-half years.

Today, TGT stock pays a quarterly dividend of 43 cents, or $1.72 per year. That works out to a dividend yield of 2.9% at current prices. That may not be an eye-popping yield, but it’s significantly higher than what can can expect from the 10-year Treasury bond, which yields 2.6%.

Let’s have a little fun with the numbers: Let’s say that Target continues to raise its dividend by 20% a year. That $1.72 annual payout would grow to $10.65 over 10 years. You effective dividend yield on your cost basis would be 18%. And this, of course, says nothing about capital appreciation or dividend reinvestment.

OK, Target is in something of a rough patch right now; I get that. So maybe 20% annualized dividend growth isn’t realistic. Let’s say something more along the lines of Target’s 20-year average of 13% is more likely. That $1.72 annual dividend still grows to $5.83 over 10 years, giving you a 10.0% dividend yield on your original cost basis.

Bottom Line

Should you run out and buy TGT stock today? Based on valuation, I would say that you certainly could. Target stock is priced at just 12 times forward earnings and 0.5 times sales, although a better approach might be to average in over the course of a few months.

It’s too early to know whether the bloodletting in Target stock is over; should Mr. Market not like the new CEO when announced, we could easily see another round of selling. But if you’re looking to buy a dividend-raising superstar to fund your retirement, put some Target stock in your shopping cart.

Chevy tweaks Cruze looks, upgrades connectivity

Chevrolet will show an updated version of its Cruze compact car -- with freshened looks and a big infotainment and connectivity upgrade -- at the New York International Auto Show on Tuesday.

The 2015 Cruze will be among three new vehicles that General Motors will reveal this week at the Jacob Javits Convention Center on Manhattan's west side. GM also will unveil a special ZO6 edition of the Corvette and a small crossover for Chevrolet.

The Cruze, which replaced the troubled Cobalt in 2010, has sold well and last month was one of the 10 best-selling cars in the U.S. Sales of the Cruze in the U.S. rose 22.7% in 2013 to 248,000.

Cruze is also Chevrolet's best-selling car around the world, with sales of more than 2.5 million since its launch in mid-2010.

GM says the new exterior styling cues for the Cruze are inspired by the well-received Impala full-size sedan launched last year -- apparent in the new bars in the grille -- and by the restyled 2014 Malibu. The front end also has a dual-port fascia similar to the Impala and Malibu for more family resemblance. The facelift for 2015 Cruze refreshes the appearance for LS, LT, RS and LTZ models.

While there are some trim touches and materials, the news inside the Cruze is technology, including additional standard and optional features including:

7-inch touchscreen and added USB ports standardA new text message alerts feature for smartphones that reads incoming texts through the car speakersSiri voice-controlled connectivity for iPhone usersAvailable OnStar 4G LTE connectivity with built-in Wi-Fi hotspot

"We've simply made a great, versatile car even better," Steve Majoros, Chevrolet's director of passenger car and crossover marketing, said in a statement. "Along with Spark, Spark EV, Sonic and Volt, Chevy's lineup of efficient, technologically advanced small cars is one of the industry's most compelling."

Cruze powertrains carry over. And there again will be an Eco higher-mileage gasoline model, while the true high-! mileage play will continued to be the well-reviewed Cruze diesel model that is rated 46 mpg on the highway.

Gold Miners Shine on Earnings…Just Not Kinross

Gold miners are getting a boost today from solid earnings from the likes of Barrick Gold (ABX), Goldcorp (GG) and Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM). The exception: Kinross Gold (KGC), which missed earnings forecasts and cut its reserves.

Reuters

How well are gold miners performing? The Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX) has gained 4.2% today, while Barrick has jumped 5.5%, Goldcorp has climbed 3.2% and Agnico Eagle has risen 1.4%. Kinross Gold has ticked up 0.1% to $5.16.

Barrick Gold reported a profit of 37 cents, lower than forecasts for 41 cents, but beat revenue and said it was still looking to cut costs. “Similar to other gold producers, [Barrick Gold] is writing down assets and reserves, and cutting capex,” says Citigroup’s Brian Yu. “The greater capex reduction should enable ABX to reach free cash breakeven at $1,200/oz.”

Agnico Eagle, meanwhile, has gained despite slashing its dividend, after reporting a profit of 25 cents a share, above forecasts for 19 cents. Cowen’s Adam Graf and Misha Levental explain:

The company finished 2013 with production ahead of guidance and costs below guidance. The company’s three-year plan envisions continued increases in production, at reduction in costs. With growth projects well underway at several operations, [Agnico Eagle] is able to reduce its capital spend while maintaining growth.

Goldcorp’s earnings missed their mark–it reported a profit of 9 cents a share, below forecasts for 23 cents –but predicted production would rise despite lower costs. Graf and Levental explain:

[Goldcorp] finished the year with an 11% increase in gold production, but fell short with respect to earnings versus consensus and our numbers. The company sees continued growth at operations in 2014, guiding for a 10-15% increase in production, as well as similar levels of capex as was seen in 2013.

5 Best Dividend Stocks To Watch For 2016

Kinross, however, said it lost 2 cents a share, below forecasts for a profit of 3 cents a share. UBS’s Brian MacArthur and team explain:

Despite achieving record full-year production (2.63Mozs vs. guidance of 2.6-2.65Mozs) at a lower than expected all-in cost ($1,063/oz vs. guidance of $1,100-$1,200/oz), adjusted earnings missed both UBS and consensus estimates largely due to below the line items…[We] believe investors will focus on the significant reduction in reserves. Despite maintaining its gold price assumption at $1,200/oz, KGC has materially lowered its proven and probable reserves by 19.9Mozs.

Despite today’s muted performance, shares of Kinross have gained 18% this year, while Barrick has risen 13%, Goldcorp has advanced 24% and Agnico Eagle is up 18%. The Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF has gained 22% in 2014.

Best Energy Stocks To Buy For 2015

Yesterday, my colleagues in Asia argued for a bounce back in oil prices and offered some Asian stocks that could benefit if that were to occur. I followed that up with a post for U.S. investors. Now UBS has offered two stock picks of its own that could do well if oil prices recover, but hold up if they don’t: Hess (HES) and Chesapeake Energy (CHK).

Getty Images

UBS analyst William Featherston and team explain why they upgraded Hess to Buy from Neutral…

Over the last three months, oil prices have declined ~22% while the E&P sector has fallen a steeper ~24% on lower than expected demand growth, rising Libyan supply, a stronger US dollar, and concerns the Saudis may be abandoning their policy of defending oil prices in favor of market share gains. While we are not bold enough to call a bottom, we see a range on WTI prices of $75 (assuming US E&Ps are forced to cut capex to restore strength to oil prices) and $95/Bbl conservatively (the 2010-14 average). Under this framework, Hess (which has declined 20% in the last 3 months) screens as having an attractive valuation risk/reward, strong liquidity to withstand a potential period of low oil prices, strong leverage to oil to benefit from a recovery, and several catalysts on the horizon to improve its discount valuation.

But this too is starting to shift. If you look at the most-recent IPOs on the New York Stock Exchange, you'll find many corners of the energy industry represented:

Tallgrass Energy Partners-- Natural gas midstream, debuted May 14 KNOT Offshore Partners (NYSE: KNOP  ) -- Shuttle tankers, debuted April 10 SunCoke Energy Partners (NYSE: SXCP  ) -- Coal/coke making, debuted Jan. 18 CVR Refining (NYSE: CVRR  ) -- Mid-continent refining, debuted Jan. 17

There have also been a few MLP-related funds to hit the market this year, including Global X Junior MLP ETFand Neuberger Berman MLP Income Fund.

  • [By Robert Rapier] There were a half a dozen initial public offerings (IPOs) by master limited partnerships in the first half of the year, and all but one are now in the green while one has nearly doubled in value.

The first MLP IPO of 2013 debuted on Jan. 15. USA Compression Partners (NYSE: USAC), which I mentioned in last week’s issue, provides compression services for the oil and gas industry. Units have advanced 36 percent since the IPO, and at the current price yield 7.3 percent.

The day after the USA Compression Partners IPO, CVR Refining (NYSE: CVRR) made its debut.  CVRR was spun off from CVR Energy (NYSE: CVI), and both companies remain majority-owned by Carl Icahn. CVR Refining’s primary assets are two refineries located in Kansas and Oklahoma with a combined processing capacity of approximately 185,000 barrels per day (bpd). These refineries are strategically located near the major Cushing, Oklahoma shipment and storage hub, with easy access to discounted feedstock from the nearby Permian basin, as well as the Bakken shale and Canadian oil sands.

But refiners have struggled with diminished margins in 2013 because of a much lower Brent-WTI differential. After the recently concluded second quarter, CVRR declared a distribution of $1.35 per unit, bringing its per-unit distributions for the first half of the year to $2.93. At the same time, CVR Refining lowered its annual distribution target to a range of $4.10 to $4.80 per unit. This was lower than the outlook issued in March, when it foresaw annual distributions of $5.50 to $6.50. CVRR units slid on the news, and are presently trading slightly below the $25 IPO price. The lower end of the revised forecast implies distributions of $1.17 per unit in the second half of the year, for a forward annualized yield of 10 percent based on the recent $23.50 unit price.

Margins matter. The more Seacor Holdings (NYSE: CKH  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. Top 5 Industrial Conglomerate Stocks To Watch Right Now

Stocks that pay dividends have never been more popular, especially among investors looking for as much income as they can generate from their portfolios. If you're a dividend investor, you need to know that the stocks you choose will give you dependable income not only now but well into the future.

What not to focus on
The mistake that many dividend investors make is to pay too much attention to current yield. Admittedly, if you need income right now, then the temptation to get instant gratification from a high-yielding dividend stock can be overwhelming.

But all too often, stocks that pay high dividends end up having to cut their payouts. By contrast, stocks that have demonstrated their ability provide strong growth in their dividends -- even if their yields aren't as high -- give investors more assurance that those stocks will be able to sustain their payouts going forward.

With that in mind, let's turn to four stocks that have attractive yields of 3% or more yet have been able to produce impressive dividend growth at a 10% or greater annual clip for the past decade.

Advisors' Opinion:

Coming towards NSN, this is another huge business for the company, which is likely to continue growing in the near future. This particular business has been a recent cash cow for Nokia and has helped the company reduce its losses resulting from other business divisions. Previously known as the Nokia Siemens Network, buying out Siemens' (SI) stake from the division makes this a more independent unit that Nokia could focus on.

  • [By Louie Grint]

    A discouraging diagnosis
Second, here's a well-known global leader in most of its key businesses: Siemens AG (NYSE: SI  ) .

In this case, the company reported a lackluster fourth quarter, with a year-over-year decrease in both revenue and earnings. Revenue and orders dropped 1% to 21.2 billion euros and 21 billion euros, respectively.

  • [By Dan Carroll]

This all adds up to a risky bet for the German economy, which hangs on to growth by a thread. Leading German manufacturers are also in danger while exports are at risk. Siemens' (NYSE: SI  ) stock plunged more than 5% this week, as the global conglomerate's own Chinese business risks falling on the nation's downturn. Just a few years ago, Siemens' Chinese prospects were soaring, helped by the country's mass urbanization and need for manufactured goods and electronics. Now, however, the company's CEO says he sees "no momentum" from China, and the company has cut its sales outlook for this year. That's a bad omen for Germany from a diversified company often seen as a bellwether of the nation's economy.

  • [By Jeff Reeves]

One turnaround play worth considering is German industrial titan Siemens (SI). The company has lagged the broader market for a number of reasons, including the global downturn and its Europe exposure. But the negativity seems priced in. While Siemens is up 11% year-to-date, shares trade at just 13 times fiscal 2014 earnings estimates.

Top 5 Recreation Companies To Watch In Right Now

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of recreational vehicle maker Thor Industries (NYSE: THO  ) popped 10% today after its quarterly results topped Wall Street expectations.

So what: The stock has rallied nicely over the past year on rebounding consumer spending, and today's third-quarter results -- profit increased 6% on a 13% jump in revenue -- suggest that things are only getting better. While markets remain competitive, Thor is entering the peak RV selling season, when demand improves and discounting slows, giving analysts plenty of optimism over its margin growth in 2013.

Now what: Don't expect the operating momentum to slow anytime soon. "Our results for the third quarter reflect the dealer optimism and improved retail consumer demand that has been building since the beginning of the year," said Chairman and CEO Peter Orthwein. "Based on the current positive momentum we see in our markets, we are confident in our ability to generate growth in sales and earnings for the remainder of the year." With the stock now up more than 70% from its 52-week lows and trading at a near-20 P/E, however, much of that growth might already be baked into the price.
