Hot Canadian Stocks To Buy Right Now

Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX  ) launched streaming video services in Canada way back in 2010, more than a year before any other international territory. So it only makes sense that the Canadian market is acting more mature than other Netflix expansion spots.

Last week, Canadian cable company TELUS (NYSE: TU  ) CEO Darren Entwistle said that Netflix might be as much of an opportunity as a competitor. The company could sell rebranded Netflix services under its own banner to get a leg up on its mostly larger head-to-head competitors. Pairing with local cable providers is a strategy that Netflix hasn't considered (at least not publicly), but it's a wrinkle that's worth keeping a watchful eye on.

In this video, Fool contributor Anders Bylund explains what's so new about Entwistle's potential strategy, and how Netflix could leverage the idea to quicker international growth.

Your guide to investing in Netflix
The tumultuous performance of Netflix shares since the summer of 2011 has caused headaches for many devoted shareholders. While the company's first-mover status is often viewed as a competitive advantage, the opportunities in streaming media have brought some new, deep-pocketed rivals looking for their piece of a growing pie. Can Netflix fend off this burgeoning competition, and will its international growth aspirations really pay off? These are must-know issues for investors, which is why The Motley Fool has released a premium report on Netflix. Inside, you'll learn about the key opportunities and risks facing the company, as well as reasons to buy or sell the stock. The report includes a full year of updates to cover critical new developments, so make sure to click here and claim a copy today.

Top 5 Asian Companies For 2016: Goldcorp Incorporated(GG)

It produces and sells gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc. The company was founded in 1954 and is headquartered in Vancouver, Canada.

Advisors' Opinion:

The five largest holdings in the GDX fund make up 45% of the total portfolio. They are Goldcorp (NYSE: GG), Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX), Newmont Mining (NYSE: NEM), Silver Wheaton (NYSE: SLW), and Randgold Resources (Nasdaq: GOLD).

  • [By Taylor Muckerman]

The market has not been kind to gold miners or gold investors in 2013. With prices finally crossing back above $1,300 per ounce this week, will the miners' quarterly reports add to the momentum? Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (NYSE: FCX  ) will kick things off on Tuesday, July 23, followed by much larger gold-producing peers Goldcorp (NYSE: GG  ) and Newmont Mining (NYSE: NEM  ) .

  • [By Doug Ehrman]

    The verdict
When gold prices remain stagnant, even in the face of global weakness, it's time for concern. Gold has enjoyed a solid run, but the current slump seems likely to continue. In addition, where miners such as Goldcorp (NYSE: GG  ) have underperformed the commodity for an extended period, earlier in the week that trend seemed to be reversing. Structural changes of this nature should be seen as an additional warning sign and a cause to stay on the sidelines. If you want to maintain some exposure to gold, the miners may be ready to reverse some of their underperformance and may provide a more attractive investment profile at current levels. Gold remains under pressure, and a tumble to $1,400 seems a good probability.

How bad were contrarian picks in 2013? While Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) has gained 98% in 2013 after losing 45% in 2012, others caused heavy losses. Barrick Gold (ABX), for instance, has dropped another 51% this year after losing 25% in 2012, while Goldcorp (GG) has fallen 41% after dropping 19%. Advisors' Opinion:

There is a lot of buzz over recent energy activity in Sub-Saharan Africa. With Anadarko Petroleum (NYSE: APC  ) and Eni (NYSE: E  ) making large gas finds off the coast of Mozambique, several majors are now looking to get in the game as well. BP plans to spend $540 million over the next five years to develop a part of this gas field that could hold well over 100 trillion cubic feet.

Integrated oil companies seem to have finally come out of the shadows. With a world economy on the rebound after the 2007/8 crisis, demand for oil began to climb again. However, as the activity slowdown affected some companies more than others, emerging market trends are expected to do so. For example, Europe has been the hardest hit region with respect to the oil & gas industry, and continues to slowly recover, in North America the gas boom reached its zenith and activities began to move offshore in the search for oil. For Eni (E) has been a troubled road since 2008, reflected by a deep decline on its stock face value. Although performance has been somewhat stable, stock value never recovered pre-crisis levels and gurus have not been very active on the stock. Can something different be expected from this integrated oil producer?

  • [By Fede Zaldua]

Eni (E) is an authentic cash cow for its shareholders. I believe the company will be able to sustain a greater than 6% cash dividend yield in 2014 even when the company's estimated 2015 free cash flow (FCF) yield is at just 4%. Asset sales as well as high oil prices should help the company meet its capex requirements and to continue giving back cash to shareholders through dividends. The recent sale of its stake in Sever Energia to the Novatek-GazpromNeft Joint Venture represents a clear hint into the company's strategy. After all, Eni's portfolio has several high quality disposal candidates which could attract the industry's interest – the first disposal candidate that comes to my mind is the remaining 8% stake Eni owns in Galp. The Italian oil and gas leader, which is held by Tom Gayner, sells for 12.5 times 2014 earnings and 5.5 times EV/EBITDAX.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Sean Williams]

The other two I'd throw into the sustainable column are Johnson & Johnson and Abbott Laboratories (NYSE: ABT  ) . J&J, as I noted, is a pharmaceutical and personal-products behemoth as well, so it can offer an investor a lot more diversification beyond just medical devices. But for the sake of argument, I'm focusing strictly on medical devices here. The same goes for Abbott Labs, which can offer investors the opportunity of mitigating some of their investing risk with the security of generic-pharmaceutical sales. In the fourth quarter of 2012, for example, the company's pharmaceutical and nutritional operations contributed to 76% of total sales, leaving its diagnostic and device business on the back burner.

Abbott Laboratories sa(ABT)id it will sell a portion of its generics pharmaceuticals business to Mylan Inc.(MYL) in an all-stock transaction valued at $5.3 billion, another health-care deal driven in part by tax advantages. Mylan shares rose 4.1% to $52.25, while Abbott shares rose 1.9% to $42.10 premarket.

  • [By Seth Robey]

    Another option emerges
In last week's edition, I teased that one addition to the stalwart section of our virtual portfolio was a glaring omission from the big biotech segment. That company, Amgen (NASDAQ: AMGN  ) , isn't traditionally considered a stalwart, but with a valuation more reminiscent of big pharma than big biotech, a 1.6% dividend yield, and acquisition clout, Amgen could provide stability to any portfolio. But then Abbott Labs (NYSE: ABT  ) reported its quarterly earnings and its post-restructuring narrative presented a more clear companion to Johnson & Johnson.

  • [By Brendan Conway]

The intuition is something like this: Youe investing in quality companies with strong balance sheets which are capable of weathering rough markets. But theye not stodgy old dividend-centric companies so much as growing firms which choose dividends as a means of rewarding shareholders, such as Abbott Laboratories (ABT) or Lowe’s (LOW).
