Click on chart to track premarkets

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) Investors were hoping to claw back some ground Monday following a week of losses.

U.S. stock futures edged higher ahead of the open, while global markets remained under pressure.

Last week was a rough one for U.S. stocks. The Dow Jones industrial average shed around 2% Friday to end the week down 3.5%. The Nasdaq and S&P 500 both closed more than 2% lower Friday, and also posted losses for the week.

Emerging markets extended recent losses Monday amid worries about an economic slowdown and liquidity shortfalls.

"So the tide is coming out of emerging markets," said Dominic Rossi, chief investment officer for Fidelity Worldwide Investment, in a market report. "The prospect of the end of cheap money in the west, with the certainty of the end of even cheaper money in China, is forcing up the cost of capital across the [emerging markets] asset class."

But, this concern isn't just relegated to Walgreen. Rite-Aid (NYSE: RAD  ) , for instance, only recently recorded an annual profit in fiscal 2013 -- its first such annual profit since 2006! Rite-Aid's problems flow from two fronts: weaker store traffic and extremely high debt levels, which weigh down its strategic options. Even the bigger CVS Caremark (NYSE: CVS  ) is having its own set of problems. In the first-quarter it delivered a pharmacy same-store prescription increase of 2%, but saw pharmacy same-store sales dip by 1.4% because of more generic prescriptions being filled. This is a low-margin sector, so anything that can drag down margins can dramatically affect these stocks.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Preliminary results show decent success with Walgreen's strategy. During April, same-store sales rose 1.2%, with larger gains of 4.7% in pharmacy sales pointing to customers returning to Walgreen's fold. May's increase in comps of 2.8% showed the same tilt toward the pharmacy side of the business. Yet, rival CVS Caremark (NYSE: CVS  ) has also given investors some positive news, guiding earnings and revenue last month to the upper end of previously provided ranges amid favorable impacts of greater generic-drug availability. Despite Walgreen's success, CVS remains a strong competitive threat, especially with its combination of pharmacy benefits management and retail drug stores.

CVS Caremark Corp.(CVS) has reached an agreement to buy Navarro Discount Pharmacy, the nation’s largest Hispanic-owned drugstore chain. Financial terms weren’t disclosed.

I went out on a limb last week, and now it's time to see how that decision played out.

I predicted that Sirius XM Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI  ) would close lower on the week. The satellite-radio provider has been a market beast over the past four years, but racing to a new multiyear high when tech giants were starting to enter the premium-audio market seemed risky. Shares of Sirius XM declined 2.5% on the week. I was right. I predicted that the tech-heavy Nasdaq would outperform the Dow Jones Industrial Average. (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) . This has been a tricky call lately, so how did it play out this time? Well, the market finally took a breather this week, and secondary stocks closed flat, with the Nasdaq shedding less than 0.1% on the week. The Dow managed to close 1.2% lower. I was right. My final call was for Costco (NASDAQ: COST  ) to beat Wall Street's income estimates in its latest quarter. The class act in warehouse clubs has been posting blowout quarterly results over the past year, and I was banking on seeing the trend continue. Analysts were looking for a profit of $1.03 a share during the quarter, and it came through with earnings of $1.04 a share. Wow! That was close. But I was right.

Three out of three? Awesome! That makes me 16 out of 18 over the past six weeks.
