Top 5 Diversified Bank Companies To Own For 2014

On Thursday, International Data Corporation (IDC) came out with its 2014 First Quarter Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker and shed some light on the ongoing trends in the global tablet market. The figures reported by the data giant, though not very encouraging, were strong enough to bring smile on the faces of some tablet manufacturers, but Apple (AAPL), forcing us to think if this particular consumer electronic space is getting sour for the tech giant. Let take a look at what going on.

1Q14 Figures Suggest Sluggish Growth

During the first quarter of 2014, global tablet shipments reached 50.4 million units, up from 48.6 million units of the prior year period, translating into a decent 3.9% jump. But, this also denotes a sequential drop of 35.7% compared to the fourth quarter of 2013, primarily because the shipments of the previous quarter were pushed up greatly by the consumer spending habits during the holiday season.

Despite the 3.9% increase in quarterly shipments, industry experts and analysts are not happy and they feel the growth momentum of the space is gradually slowing down. The major reason for the loss of pace is the growth in the large-screen smartphones. Consumers are increasingly opting for smartphones with screen sizes above 5 inches as they feel that a better substitute of tablets, being easier to carry. Even the consumer spending nature is changing as more and more people are holding on to their existing tablets for a time period longer than estimated. As a result of this repeat sales is going down, automatically pulling down the momentum.

The big question for American Capital Agency will be whether its hedging program helps it avoid big losses. CYS Investments (NYSE: CYS  ) reported a big loss last week, with its book value taking a large hit because of hedging practices that didn't work as well as CEO Kevin Grant would have liked. If its hedges work, then American Capital Agency earnings could give investors a nice surprise next week, forestalling any need for further dividend cuts -- at least for now.

Investors were bullish on CYS Investments (NYSE: CYS  ) early on Wednesday, apparently expecting great news from the mortgage REIT's second-quarter earnings report. Later in the day, their hopes were quashed, as CYS announced a loss of $402.3 million, or $2.32 per share, compared with a $17.7 million loss, or $0.10 per share, in the previous quarter. One year ago, CYS declared net income of $101.7 million, or $0.87 per share.

But if you're hankering for a safer play on the banking sector and yearn for those reliable dividends, it's worth having a look atHSBC (LSE: HSBA  ) (NYSE: HBC  ) . After recent broker upgrades, its shares are on a prospective yield of 5%, with a 4.2% historic yield in the bag. That's well ahead ofStandard CharteredandBarclays, the other two dividend-paying banks. And HSBC surely has the safest dividend in the sector.

HSBC (LSE: HSBA  ) (NYSE: HBC  )
On May 7, HSBC Holdings announced a first-quarter dividend of $0.10 per share. As has been the company's policy since its last annual report, it will pay an equal dividend for each of the first three quarters, with the final dividend being variable. The latest City forecasts suggest a full-year payout of about 33 pence per share, which would be about 14% up on last year.

Bloomberg's data on bank CEO pay is even more interesting because 2012 actually wasn't a great year for financial companies' reputations. The London Whale controversy at JPMorgan remains at top of mind given Jamie Dimon headlines. However, let's not forget HSBC's (NYSE: HBC  ) $1.9 billion settlement to the U.S. related to money laundering accusations.
