Best Canadian Companies To Watch For 2014

Don't look now but SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR  ) has become the best-performing stock in the solar industry. Over the past year, it's been better than fellow U.S.-based companies First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) and SolarCity (NASDAQ: SCTY  ) , and far better than most Chinese manufacturers. Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE  ) and Trina Solar lag well behind even after recent pops higher; only Canadian Solar (NASDAQ: CSIQ  ) can come close to SunPower's return (and I'll get into the reason for that below).

SPWR Total Return Price data by YCharts

So, why is this stock so hot and can the streak continue? I think so, and there are three big reasons why.

Downstream solar is the dominant paradigm
If you have the choice between risky solar manufacturers and a downstream installer, it's better to choose the installer right now. They can lock in long-term power supply agreements, building a business that acts more like a bond than a volatile stock. SolarCity has used this model with success, and despite the fact that it isn't reporting a profit yet, it's building solar installations that will generate revenue for 20 or more years.

Weekend news likely prompts a negative reaction Monday, but Tues-Wed could go either way. GM stock could respond well if March share meets/beats expectations and if GM were to make adequate statements explaining concerns and offering remedies (OnStar can play role here). A sub-17% share and/or more negative revelations could pressure the stock further. We enter the week with a buy-on-weakness approach but acknowledge that this latest escalation adds ST market share risk. Thus, we also look to add positions in Buy-rated Ford (F) (possible ST share gains) and [American Axle & Manufacturing (AXL)] (pulled back + Q2 schedules appear intact).

Europe has also experienced a tough economic climate this year, and the German DAX (DAXINDICES: ^DAX  ) and French CAC 40 indexes haven't had the best time so far in 2013. France's index has managed to climb a fraction of a percent, but that hasn't helped many French stocks this year: French oil giant Total SA (NYSE: TOT  ) has lost more than 10% year to date despite the company's forward-looking moves to expand into Africa and other locations; Total recently agreed to the construction of a refinery in Uganda for 30,000 barrels per day of refining. The DAX has dipped as Germany, long one of the lone bright spots in Europe, has seen its economy suffer from the eurozone's crisis and its PMI dive into contraction territory.

We'll start things out with a name that may come as a surprise, Total SA (TOT). Yes, the energy sector has gotten shellacked in recent months, and Total has been no exception: this $133 billion French oil and gas company is down almost 20% in the last six months. But while Total is down, it's not out yet – this stock looks ready for a reversal thanks to a classic technical price pattern.

Total is currently forming a "cup and handle pattern". The cup and handle is formed by a cup-shaped rounding bottom in shares that's followed up by a short-duration channel down. The buy signal comes on a move through the pattern's price ceiling at $60. A move through $60 tells us that buyers are squarely in control in IBM.

  • [By Selena Maranjian]

AuRico Gold (NYSE: AUQ  ) plunged 44%, having posted some disappointing results lately, and is also suffering from a competitive disadvantage, with its costs above those of some peers. On the plus side, though, the company recently initiated a dividend, which now yields about 2.8%.
